S2 E5: Something About Studying the Beatles with Rubber Soul

This week on Something Will Happen Melissa talks with all four members of Rubber Soul: João Rodrigo, Mauricio Gomes, Gustavo Gazana, and Caio Bartola! They discuss how the band came to be, their own personal stories of becoming musicians, and their experience performing as a tribute band.

Gustavo begins by telling us how the band was formed in 2005. He originally had a tribute band called the PlaymoBeatles (a fun take on the toy Playmobil!) At the time, the band members playing Paul and John were leaving his band. Luckily for them all, Maricio also had a Beatles tribute band and the members playing George and Ringo were leaving that band. Brought together by a mutual friend, the two bands merged to create Rubber Soul.

The band members take turns telling their own stories of how they started playing music and their own journeys of discovering the music of the Beatles. They all talk about the work involved being a “boots and suits” tribute band and the difficulties of being as true to the original as they can. They share the studying that goes into their work as tribute artists; not only learning the instruments and vocal harmonies but the stage presence and mannerisms of the Beatles as well.

They finish up the conversation by recalling their memories and first impressions of Abbey Road on the River. They talk of the friends they have made and how it feels to be a part of the Abbey Road family. They leave us excited for their performance in May by dropping a few hints of what they plan to bring to their performance this year!
