S2 E2: Something About the ”Big Show” with BritBeat

This week Melissa talks to Chris of longtime Abbey Road favorite, BritBeat. Together, they talk of how the band got started, memories of past Abbey Road festivals, and what they are planning to bring to the festival in May!

Since BritBeat hasn’t been to the festival since 2019, Melissa starts off the conversation by asking how the band coped with the Covid-19 pandemic. Chris tells us how they used the time that they couldn’t perform to revamp the videos for their amazing multi-media aspect of their performances. He explains how important it is to the band to make the experience as interactive and professional as possible. Melissa and Chris bond over their excitement to see the fully realized theatrical multi-media BritBeat performance at Abbey Road on the River in May!

Chris then tells of how he came to love the Beatles during his middle school years as many of us can relate to. He was unsure of what song to choose for a school project when his parents said, “well, you can’t go wrong with the Beatles,” and after that, he was hooked. He began playing music shortly after and practiced learning the songs of the band he loved so much.

As his skills progressed and Chris made more musical friends in his high school years, he began forming his own band. He recruited friends to play and they entered their high school variety show with a performance of “She Loves You” then followed up the next year with “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. From those performances, the band was discovered and booked for several shows, and their career has snowballed from there. Chris reflects on the incredulity of being able to grow his childhood interest into a career spanning two decades!

Chris reflects on his history playing at Abbey Road on the River starting in 2008. He tells a story of a very sweaty performance in which the band performed a show of the Beatles’ Hamburg days in all leather outfits. Most of all, he reflects on the energy shared between the performers and the crowd. As many of us know, there is just something special about the energy at Abbey Road on the River.
